Kobe Steak@Gene's Sausage Shop and Delicatessen

Wine Selection
Many steak lovers still have no idea where to purchase Kobe Beef  including myself  until I stumbled upon a place call Gene's Sausage Shop-genessausage.com.  There's a few restaurants that serves these up but it can get very pricey.  Not only Genes has Kobe beef  but it also has a great selection of cheese, asssorted European chocolates, fresh produce and wine.

Kobe Beef  is normally consume shashimi style(raw) sliced very thinly.  Un-like aged beef it doesn't sit in a controlled room for months although it can be nurtured that way also.  The reason Kobe Beef doesn't need to be age for it to be tender is due to the way the cow is raised and pampered.  It's origin is Kobe, Japan, hence the name 'Kobe'.  The Japanese mastered a skillful way to make their beef so tender it melts in your mouth literally like butter.  Due to the lack of the inactivity of the cow it produces marbelization in the meat which forms fat.  Fat is flavor people!  The cattle gets fed beer and wine while getting a back massage.  Might as well give them a pedicure and manicure also.

Gene's is located inside Lincoln Square off Western Ave. Brown line and Lincoln St.  It's only a few yards away from the station.  Lincoln square is an outdoor shopping center only a block long but it's clustered with many great eateries.  You can find many cuisines from Greek to French and German here.  Gene's sits right in the middle of all this chaos that gives you a feel of being in a small European square with shoppers scattered throughout.  The big European  fountain in the center adds a great soothing feeling while dining outside.  There's also another location on  Belmont St.

Okay enough about the square, let's discuss food.  Gene's is a two story German deli that offers many delicacy and unusual finds.  When waiting to be serve don't forget to grab a number otherwise you'll stand around looking like a ding dong and get pissed off for your own stupidity.

They have a large selection of German cheese, cured ham, sausage, smoked fish, vegetables and all kinds of spices including homemade headcheese.  For steak lovers they have all cuts of beef including Kobe Beef that goes for $24 a pound.  I find it very reasonably priced compare to ordering at a restaurant.  If you can't wait to cook your food they have a wide selection of home cook German food at the ready ranging from liver and onions, cured sausage, variety of salads and much more.

I did say earlier this is a two story deli.  What's on the second floor you ask?  The second floor is dedicated to wine and wine only.  They have a very large selection of German wine to suit your needs.   Cheese is also available for you to mix and match with your wine. You can even taste the cheese and sausages before buying.
